Wow! I haven’t drawn a new comic in over a year. That’s shameful.
So, a lot has changed since my last post. I’m a daddy now, and I’ve been throwing myself into that role as much as possible. The result is less time for hobby stuff like POV Comic.
The good news is that it’s given me a ton of inspiration for new comics.
I wrote the script for today’s comic back on 11/24/2014, so I figure it was about time I put some time in on it.
You might have noticed that I appear to have taken a step backward when it comes to the quality of my drawing – this is for a couple of reasons. One is that I’m out of practice. The other is that I used to draw my comic in Adobe Illustrator and spend a bunch of time tweaking the lines to make the characters look how I wanted them and then doing lots of copy/paste to make minor changes from panel to panel.
That looked pretty good, but it wasn’t helping me to hone my drawing – just my illustrator skills. Today’s comic was completely drawn using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I started in Procreate and then moved to Adobe Draw (which didn’t quite translate exactly how I wanted) and then final “inking” was done in Adobe Photoshop using Astropad.
I am in love with Procreate. I really enjoy working with it and it’s probably the best $5 I’ve spent in a long time.
Astropad is pretty awesome, but a little quirky… I’ve got a few gripes about it, because it isn’t PERFECT, but it is pretty damn cool. it allows you to mirror your Mac’s display to your iPad pro and use it as a stylus tablet passing through the tilt and pressure information from the apple pencil. It’s pretty magical and works over USB and WiFi.
I’ll shut up now and let you get back to your day.
